Melissa Whellams, Based in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, Melissa spent most of her life exploring and enjoying the outdoors whether it be hiking, fishing, skiing, or camping. Growing up with a painter/dancer mother she has always been exposed to the arts and took an interest in photography while at university. Melissa’s photography instructor urged her to pursue her dream of becoming a photo journalist; however, photography took the backseat to a dedicated career of consulting in the mining industry. It was only in the past couple of years that she rediscovered her passion for photography. Missing a creative outlet in her life, she began taking photos on one her surf trips to Portugal. Encouraged by the positive feedback she received by friends and strangers alike, she hasn’t put her camera down since. Photography has enabled her to view her every day surroundings with a new perspective and find beauty in places she once took for granted. It has also given her a new appreciation for winter, a season she used to despise. Melissa loves capturing nature, and looking for unique ways to incorporate the human element into landscape photography.
Now, every spare moment she has you will find her in the mountains in Canada, or venturing off around the globe to explore new and exciting territories. Her career to date has afforded her the opportunity to travel to remote locations in over 65 countries and she has returned to many of these places to rediscover them through her camera lens. When she is not “getting lost” in nature, she can be found shooting portraits, corporate events, and weddings.
Melissa resides in Calgary with her two dogs Neko and Dallas. She is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
