n autumn each year ice caves begin to take shape and last throughout the winter. These trips are somewhat temperature dependent as ice caves must be treated with the utmost respect in regards to the ceiling being supportive along with other factors that your specialized guide evaluates constantly.
Caves can be found in several different locations on the south side of Vatnajökull. We´ll travel to a secret location on the glacier and walk underneath some hundred year old ice dome. Ice crystals, halls and tunnels are waiting for us in the ice cave. Entering the channel is like entering another world. This is a labyrinth of ice, with numerous ice formations, where everything is blue and white, and looks as the work of a perfectionist. We guarantee that this trip is far better then ever expected. The ice and rock formations are astonishing, an the caves freeze into different forms each year.
You are required to take warm clothes with you, warm hiking boots, windproof jacket and trousers, hat, scarf, gloves/mittens – for more info see here. We´ll provide helmets, torches and crampons. You must be in a fairly good physical shape, we might even have to crawl during some parts of the trip.
As we enter the ice cave we´ll get the chance to experience ice as only a few people have seen it. The still standing air in the cave gives the ice perfect conditions to form fantastic shapes and beautiful colors.
